Metals in Health: Poison or Cure?
by: Dr. Loi H Do
Date: Thursday December 11, 2014
Time: 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Location: Houston Science Center – Building 593 — Room 102
Overview
The all too common stories in the press about toxic metals in the environment or their link to human diseases have led to a general fear of metals. Is this negative public perception of all non-carbon elements grounded in scientific facts? This seminar will explore the biological effects of metals in human physiology, with a special emphasis on their roles in medicine. As illustrative examples of the beneficial value of metals in human health, brief historical accounts of the medicinal chemistry of technetium and platinum compounds will be discussed. We will examine how research in medicinal inorganic chemistry today is breaking away from traditional paradigms in drug discovery, and how my group’s research in the development of new pro-drug activation strategies seeks to address current challenges in chemotherapy using synthetic metal complexes. This seminar is suitable for both scientific and non-scientific audience members.
